Definitely… the sun and I don´t get along very well. If the other day I told you about how terrible and how many difficulties I had had to shoot Yaiza,  Libertina´s shooting was similar, or even worse.

Athens, April, 12 in the morning, almost 40 degrees… that was the scenario, but not because I had chosen it, but when you have many people to shoot in a very limited period, someone has to be shot at that time.

Libertina, or Eleni, is an albanian girl I met thanks to the pics which other friend who is also in DEADLYWOOD: Ninel. I had an appointment with her in Athens, and as we would like to shoot in some building, factory or abandoned place, we decided to go to Pireo. Yes, the same Pireo which is so typical, luxurious and touristic which appears even in the worst Greece travel guide. But while others go there looking for glamour, luxury, party, etc…  Álex goes looking for abandoned places.

We began to work in some kind of alleys near the train station, under a hellish sun which, once again, was very hard for me to tame. And if that was not enough, soon we had some public because some vagabonds who were hanging around the place, decided to enjoy their day by attending to that photographic experience.

The situation turned uncomfortable: the sun, the public, Eleni´s lack of experience, the heat, taking care of the stuff, knowing that the pics I was taking  were horrible… Finally, we choose the  “plan B”  that was to change the location. We found an abandoned building, but once again, the ‘homeless’ world was present there. We had  to spend the time taking more pics under the sun while we waited for the entrance to be cleared, something that happened in more or less 30 minutes.

In the end, when there was nobody around, we managed to gain access to the building and once there, hidden from the sun, we could start to work with the proper conditions. But surprises never end… other vagabond appeared and told us he lived there and he also said (don´t panic, this is not Barcelona!) there was no problem in shooting there. Now I remember, he was really interested in being taken a pic with Eleni, but she was not really very keen on it. We kept on working and soon we realized it was late, it was already lunch time and we still had to go back to the center of Athens… so we packed our stuff and decided to move.

But as ALWAYS happens, the best things are those you haven´t thought. So the photo shoot turned out to be a good one when after having taken all our stuff and headed to the exit, I saw the door… the background… the frame… and I told Eleni “waaaaaaaaaaaait, one pic more!!! Go to the door…” And that´s the way it was. I told her to pose as you see in the pic, I took 2 or 3 pictures (I really love one of them who was a proud rival to the one I am commenting to become a part of  DEADLYWOOD) and mission accomplished!!!
Not much more… packing everything again, one hour in the train to Athens, more heat, speech about  H.I.M., time to say goodbye, eating very quicky and in the afternoon: ready for another girl.

Regarding to the photoshop aspect which people seem to love so much, what I tried was to add a little bit more of “strenght» to the picture by putting some years on it and by creating that «dirty» look with a texture. I enhanced a Eleni´s eyes slightly, turned her a a little bit paler and success!

A very big hug to Libertina and once again, my most sincere thank you for having shared such a chaotic shooting with me.

Definitivamente el sol y yo no nos llevamos bien. Si el otro día os hablaba acerca de lo mal que lo había pasado por su culpa y de las dificultades que había tenido en la sesión de Yaiza, el caso de Libertina fue similar, pero muuuuucho peor.

Atenas, Abril, 12 de la mañana, casi 40 grados… ese era el panorama, y no porque yo lo hubiese escogido, sino porque cuando tienes a muchas personas que fotografiar en un plazo de tiempo muy limitado, a alguien le tiene que tocar esa franja horaria.

Libertina, o Eleni, es una chica albanesa que conocí gracias a las fotos que le había hecho otra gran amiga que también está presente en DEADLYWOOD: Ninel. Quedé con ella en Atenas, y como queríamos hacer algo en algún edificio, fábrica o lugar abandonado, decidimos irnos al Pireo. Sí, al mismo Pireo que es tan típico, lujoso y turístico que sale hasta en la peor guía de viaje de Atenas. Pero mientras toda la gente va allí buscando glamour, lujo, fiesta, etc… Álex va buscando edificios abandonados.

Empezamos a trabajar en una especie de callejones que estaban al lado de la estación de tren, bajo un sol infernal que una vez más me costaba muchísimo domar. Por si eso fuera poco, en nada tuvimos público, ya que unos cuantos vagabundos que por allí andaban, decidieron alegrarse la vista ante semejante espectáculo fotográfico.

La situación era incómoda: entre el sol, la expectación, Eleni que no tenía experiencia, el calor, vigilar las cosas, el saber que estaban saliendo un churro de fotos… Al final optamos por el “plan B” que era cambiar de localización. Encontramos el acceso a un edificio abandonado, pero una vez más, el mundo “homeless” estaba por allí presente. Tuvimos que esperar y hacer el tiempo sacando más fotos a pleno sol mientras la entrada quedaba despejada, algo que tardó unos 30 minutos en suceder.

Al final y cuando no hubo moros en la costa, conseguimos abrirnos paso hacia el edificio y allí dentro, y ya sin tanto sol pudimos empezar a trabajar en condiciones. Pero las sorpresas no acabaron ahí… otro vagabundo nos dijo que él vivía ahí y (tranquilos, esto no es Barcelona!) que no había problema en que hiciésemos fotos en su casa. Es más, ahora que lo recuerdo, estaba bastante interesado en que le sacase una foto con Eleni, cosa que a ella no le hacía gracia alguna. Continuamos trabajando y al poco tiempo vimos que se había hecho tarde, era hora de comer y teníamos todavía una en tren al centro de Atenas… así que recogimos el chiringuito.

Pero como SIEMPRE sucede, las cosas menos pensadas son las mejores. Y esa sesión se salvó cuando ya al haber recogido y estarnos dirigiendo hacia la salida, vi la puerta… el fondo… el encuadre… y le dije a Eleni “espeeeeeeeera, una foto más!!! Vete a la puerta…” Y así fue. La coloqué tal y como veis, le hice 2 ó 3 fotos horizontales y otras 2 ó 3 verticales (una de las cuales me encanta y fue digna competidora de la que hoy os comento para formar parte de DEADLYWOOD) y misión cumplida!!!
Poco más… recoger de nuevo rápidamente, una hora de tren a Atenas, más calor, conversación acerca de H.I.M., despedida, comer a toda prisa y por la tarde… a por otra niña.

En el aspecto photoshop que tanto le gusta conocer a la gente, lo que intenté fue añadirle un poco más de “fuerza” a la foto, envejeciéndola, cargándome todo el color y dándole ese aspecto de sucio con una textura. Acentué un poquito los ojos de Eleni, la dejé un poco más pálida y prueba superada.

Un abrazo enorme a Libertina y una vez más, mi más sincero agradecimiento por haber compartido esa sesión tan caótica conmigo.

Deadlywood #11 (Redux) – María Moya

It´s time to talk in DEADLYWOOD about one of my fav pics and about one which I am especially proud of, María Moya‘s.

María is a fantastic make up artist I was lucky to know during one of my trips to Madrid to work with my big friend Rodrigo Uquillas (hey hey Rodri!) owner of Flash In Studio. But not only María is a very good make up artist, but also is really good at posing, so I definitely had to shoot her.

My initial idea for the pic was very simple, I just wanted a black and white naked picture, three quarters, where more than the fact of the naked body, were her hair, her eyes and (obviously) her tattoo which really caught the attention of the beholder.

But suddenly an octopus crawled into the studio and both, Rodri and I, thought that if María didn´t run away or looked at us with weird face, we would probably get an awesome shot, because of how visually impacting it would be and also for the interesting textures which the octopus would add to the black and white.

I took several pictures, not too many, and almost immediately I got the one I was looking for, which is the one you see. Sometimes I get good pics I love, but maybe they don´t match 100% with the idea I had in mind. But I must say this time I was really satisfied.

I would like to add that some people has accused me “you´ve copied this pic from…”, “ someone else has already taken this one…”. I must certainly say NO, I didn´t copy it from anybody because everything was a pure coincidence: my initial idea didn´t include any octopus as pet. I think it´s almost impossible to do something that hasn´t already been done in photography nowadays, and if isnt´t, I don´t think it´s me who is going to make it. All I tried to do was something with my style for a beautiful friend like María… as long as she is happy with the results, the rest of opinions, which I respect, I don´t really care about. Other of the typical questions many people asked me was “was the octopus alive???”. “Oh yes madam… can´t you see how healthy it looks and how strongly it grasps the girl?.”

Besides, as I told you in the beginning, I like this pic a lot and I have a special sympathy because it shows María just like I met her, before her BEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUTIFUL dark hair had suffered a terrible accident, really really serious… I think it is a very nice memory of the time when she had that hair. You´ll see soon new stuff with her new look since I have another photo shoot kept inside my magic vault, but probably you are not going to recognize her…

To put an end to today´s post… retouching: gentlemen, look for, compare and if you find something… but I already tell you NO. The only thing I did was to achieve a black and white which emphasized the octopus texture and the tattoo. As certain ‘friend’ of mine would say: “photoshop free”.

María…  very big kiss, thanks for having helped me to achieve an unforgettable shot and don´t worry, you still look beautiful and hair grows again. Next time I´ll party with my favourite make up artist!!!!

Hoy en DEADLYWOOD toca hablar de una de mis fotos favoritas y de las que más orgulloso me siento, la de mi queridísima María Moya.

María es una fantástica maquilladora que tuve la suerte de conocer en uno de mis viajes a Madrid para trabajar con mi gran amigo Rodrigo Uquillas (hey hey Rodri!) del Flash In Studio. Pero María no solo maquilla de una forma espectacular, sino que es una auténtica maravilla posando, así que tenía que hacerle fotos, sí o sí.

Mi idea inicial era muy básica, solamente quería un desnudo en blanco y negro, de tres cuartos, en el que más que el desnudo en sí, fuesen su cabello, su mirada y (como no…) su tatuaje quienes acaparasen toda la atención del espectador.

Pero de repente apareció por el estudio un pulpo y tanto Rodri como yo pensamos que si María no se escapaba ni ponía cara rara, podríamos conseguir una toma espectacular, por lo impactante visualmente y por el juego de texturas que iba a proporcionar el pulpo en blanco y negro.

Hice una serie de fotos, no demasiadas tampoco, y casi al instante conseguí la que quería, que es exactamente la que veis. Muchas veces consigo fotos buenas, que me gustan, pero que a lo mejor no coinciden al 100% con la idea que tengo en mente, porque no soy capaz de llevar a la realidad la idea que tengo en la cabeza. Pero he de decir que en este caso, me quedé súper satisfecho.

Algo que me gustaría comentar es que cierta gente me ha dicho “esta foto la copiaste de no sé donde…”, “ esta foto ya la hizo no sé quien…” Pues tengo que decir rotundamente que NO, que no la copié de nadie porque todo surgió de una forma muy casual: en mi idea inicial no aparecía ningún pulpo como animal de compañía. Creo que a día de hoy, hacer algo en fotografía que no esté inventado es prácticamente imposible, y si no lo es, no creo que vaya a lograrlo yo. Lo único que traté fue de hacer algo con mi estilo para una bellísima persona como es María… mientras ella esté contenta con el retrato, el resto de opiniones, que se respetan, me son un poco indiferentes. Otra de las preguntas graciosas que me hizo el personal fue “el pulpo estaba vivo???”. “Sí señora… no ve que aspecto de sanote tiene y como se agarra a la chica?.”

Además como, os contaba al principio, a esta foto además de gustarme muchísimo, le tengo un cariño muy especial, porque representa a María tal y como la conocí, antes de que su PRECIOOOOOOOOSÍSIMA melena sufriese un grave percance, pero muuuuuy grave… Creo que es un recuerdo muy bonito de cuando tenía el pelo así de largo. Pronto veréis material con su nuevo look, aunque probablemente no la reconozcáis, ya que le hice otra sesión fantástica que tengo guardada en mi caja fuerte mágica.

Para cerrar el post de hoy… tema retoque: señores, busquen, comparen y si encuentran algo… pero ya les digo yo que no. Lo único que hice fue buscar un blanco y negro muy potente, que resaltase la textura del pulpo y al tatuaje. Como diría cierta ¨amiga¨ mía, “photoshop free”.

María… un besazo enooooorme, muchísimas gracias por haberme ayudado a conseguir una foto inolvidable y ánimo que sigues estando súper linda y el pelo crece. La próxima vez de fiesta con mi maquilladora favorita!!!!

Deadlywood #10 (Redux) – Yaiza

There are photo shoots where everything goes wrong, I would say ¨photo shoots to forget». Though I wouldn´t like to say that, because Yaiza is a real love and she was not the one to blame when the pictures I took her that day were a complete disaster, or that´s at least what I thought, although she loved them.

I met Yaiza by chance thanks to a model website whose name I don´t wish to recall and I thought she was very pretty and interesting. Besides, if that was not enough, we had friends in common like Silvia and Fer from “Quiero Ser Modelo” (hi people!), or to my sister herself who was in her same classroom!!! And I didn´t know it…

Taking advantage of her summer holidays in Ares, we arranged an appointment, thought about ideas and decided to spend a nice photographic afternoon together. What I couldn´t know was that things would go so definitely wrong. The sun was absolutely terrible and made things really difficult, my speedlite was not working properly, I lost a nut who prevented me to use my light stand and umbrella, and that inspiration had abandoned me that day… So, fatal and the more that time went by I the more I realized that the stuff we had was very disappointing, nothing would be useful. We used three locations and just before the sun set and having got rid of the problems it had been causing during the afternoon, I decided to go to Río Sandeo beach, in order to take some pic by the sea and in the sand without anybody staring at her.

The pics we took there were the best, not to say the only ones which were more or less acceptable of the whole afternoon… and there it was this little jewel… I remember  I asked Yaiza to lay on the sand looking at me and that she played with the large shell (that now I realize… I had taken from home, LOL!). And I tried to find what I usually look for when I am portraiting someone: a really powerful look, a nice composition and since Yaiza is tattooed, to have her tatooes appearing in the pics. With those ingredients, Álex laying on the sand and with the speedlite which decided to cooperate for that pic, we ´ve got this picture, that I have always considered as one of my best portraits. Afternoon saved by this pic.

Regarding to the processing of the pic, and as you can see in the original one, there is ZERO photoshop or it is “photoshop free”, something that has become very popular now between those who claim to know of photography. Only a slight reframing and a conversion to a very powerful black and white who enhanced Yaiza´s captivating look and surrounded the observer.

From DEADLYWOOD I send Yaiza a super hug and a super kiss, I thank her for having shared the shoot with me and I tell her I am very sorry for having had such a bad day talking in terms of photography. Anyway, if somebody guarantees to me that in every bad day I will get such a nice jewel like this, I´ll sign right now!

Hay sesiones en las que todo sale mal, yo diría hasta “sesiones para olvidar”. Aunque no me gustaría decir eso ya que Yaiza es un amor y ella no tuvo culpa alguna de que ese día las fotos que hicimos fuesen un desastre, o que a mí al menos así me lo pareciesen, aun cuando a ella le encantaron.

A Yaiza la conocí de casualidad en una página de modelos de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme, y me pareció súper guapa e interesante. Además, por si eso fuera poco, teníamos amigos en común como Silvia y Fer de “Quiero Ser Modelo” (hola niños!), o a mi hermana que curiosamente estaba en su misma clase!!! Y yo sin saberlo…

Aprovechando sus días de veraneo en Ares, quedamos, hablamos, pensamos ideas y nos decidimos a pasar una tarde fotográfica juntos. Lo que yo no sabía es que me iban a salir tan rematadamente mal las cosas. Entre un sol que aplanaba y que dificultaba muchísimo las cosas, el flash que me fallaba, una rosca que perdí del pie del paraguas que me impidió utilizarlo y que no era mi día más inspirado… Vamos, fatal y a medida que avanzaba el tiempo yo veía que no estábamos haciendo nada mínimamente aprovechable. Estuvimos en tres localizaciones y antes de que se pusiese el sol, ya sin los problemas del sol que llevaba fastidiándonos toda la tarde, decidí ir a la playa de Río Sandeo, para hacer alguna foto en la orilla y en la arena tranquilamente y sin espectadores.

Las fotos que allí hicimos fueron de las mejores, por no decir las únicas medianamente buenas de toda la tarde… y entre ellas se encontraba esta joyita… Recuerdo que le pedí a Yaiza que se tumbase en la arena que me mirase y que jugase con la caracola (que ahora que me doy cuenta… la llevé yo de casa, ja ja ja!) Y busqué lo que siempre busco cuando hago un retrato: una mirada muy potente, una composición más o menos aceptable y ya que con Yaiza “habemus tatuaje” pues a aprovecharlo. Con eses ingredientes, Álex tirado en la arena y el flash que decidió cooperar en esa toma, conseguimos esta foto, que siempre he considerado como uno de mis mejores retratos. Tarde salvada.

A nivel procesado, y como podéis ver en la foto original, hay CERO retoque, o “photoshop free” que tan de moda está ahora entre los entendidos (y entendidas). Simplemente un muy ligero reencuadre y un blanco y negro muy potente que traté que realzase la mirada tan cautivadora de Yaiza envolviendo al espectador.

Desde DEADLYWOOD le mando un súper abrazo y un súper besazo a Yaiza, le doy las gracias por haber compartido esa sesión conmigo y le pido perdón por haber tenido un día tan malo fotográficamente hablando. Aunque bueno, si en todos mis malos días alguien me garantiza que voy a conseguir una joyita como esta, firmo ahora!.

Un besazo Yai, no te olvides por favor de que te debo una sesión mejor.

I am very happy to announce that December’s issue of the coolest magazine in Spain, BEDESEME,  is out now. And it is a very special number, not only because of the fact of being number 24 like the number of pics in DEADLYWOOD at the moment, but also because it features me in the cover… (well, to be strictly accurate, it features my all time friend and adored muse Aroa – the cover wouldn’t have been the same with a picture of me, LOL!)

For all of you who doesn’t know what BEDESEME is all about yet, I will say that is, in my opinion, European’s most important fetish & alternative magazine after Marquis Magazine, so maybe you can understand the reason of my happiness.

As I have been proudly announcing you in the last weeks, this number features me as the ‘International Photographer of the Month’... I must say I am very proud but it feels a little bit odd to me to appear like that in a magazine of my own country, but what the hell… it’s 200% true at the moment!

So please, get BEDESEME (what are you waiting for???) and you will find a very interesting (I hope…) interview – in Spanish & English – and you will have the chance of seeing some cute (I hope for the second time in 1 second…) pics. Once again, I’ve tried to be grateful and to thank those girls who are really important for me by getting their shots included, so what you see is what I like:  a  real proof of friendship.

But BEDESEME includes maaaaaaany more amazing friends this number, people who I like and I adore, like my brother of evil photoshoots Jose Cepas, cute girls like Rocío Ciarán and many other interesting people.

And to finish, I would like to thank the entire team of the BEDESEME magazine, and especially to Diego for such a  cool article and work… this is just the beginning of our evil times together.

BEDESEME #24 – Aroa by Álex Pérez

Estoy muy contento de anunciar que acaba de salir el ejemplar de Diciembre de la revista más guay de España, BEDESEME  Y es un número muy especial, no solo por el hecho de ser el 24, igual que el número de fotos que hay en DEADLYWOOD de momento, sino porque salgo en portada… (bueno, para ser estrictamente preciso, quien sale es mi amiga y adoradísima musa Aroa – la portada no hubiese sido la misma con una foto mía, ja, ja, ja!)

Para todos aquellos que no sepáis de que va BEDESEME, os diré que es en mi opinión la revista fetish / alternativa más importante de Europa después de la Marquis Magazine, así que tal vez ahora podáis entender el motivo de mi alegría.

Tal y como os he ido anunciando en las últimas semanas, salgo en este número como «Fotógrafo Internacional del Mes»… He de decir que me resulta un orgullo pero a la vez un tanto extraño aparecer así una publicación de mi país, pero que demonios… es al 200% la verdad en este momento!

Así que por favor, haceros con BEDESEME (a qué estáis esperando???) que vais a encontrar una entrevista muy interesante (espero…) – en castellano e inglés – y tendréis la oportunidad de ver unas fotos muy chulas  (vuelvo a esperar por segunda vez en un segundo). De nuevo, he vuelto a tratar de ser agradecido y de dar las gracias a aquellas chicas que son importantes de verdad para mí, consiguiendo que se publicasen sus fotos, así que lo que veis es lo que me gusta: una prueba de buena amistad.

Pero BEDESEME incluye muchas más cosas geniales en este número, gente que me gusta y a la que adoro como por ejemplo mi hermanito de la maldad fotográfica José Cepas, monadas como Rocío Ciarán y mucha más gente interesante…

Y para terminar, me gustaría darle las gracias a todo el equipo de la revista BEDESEME y en especial a Diego por un artículo tan guay y un trabajo tan bueno… este es el comienzo de muchas maldades juntos.

Deadlywood #9 (Redux) – Ninwen

The picture which will keep us busy for a while in DEADLYWOOD today, is a very special one for me and brings a lot of good memories back to my mind. Summer of 2011 I had decided not to travel anywhere, so it looked like if it was going not to be very exciting, but only until the moment that my worshipped Blanca Ninwen decided to come and to spend it with me.

Not only is Ninwen one of the more impressive and versatile photographic models in Spain, with a career of more than 8 years over the top, but also a tiny cute little thing, beautiful, sympathetic, crazy, funny and veeeeeeeeeeeery lout. I had known her for some time, but it was during her time with me when circumstances turned us into flesh and blood.

Blanca came on holiday to Galicia, looking for some peace of mind, running away from the crazy and stressful life which pursues her in the capital, and even though that was the plan, we couldn´t afford to lose the train of working together.

This picture belongs to a photo shooting we improvised in her house in Sada for little while. It was a Sunday afternoon, we were attending to Silvia Superstar’s concert, but we tried some things before the show. It was the very first time we worked together, but her experience and the easiness she has to act in front of the camera were enough to achieve good results from the start.

A few minutes later after having started, and looking always for doing different things, I asked her to climb to a small roof that was in the inner yard of the house. Any other girl (especially if she didn´t know me well) would have looked at me with a very strange face, but NOT Blanca. She is an all-terrain girl, always ready and willing to the “even more difficult yet” in order to get a good picture.

We took many and very different on that little roof you see in the picture, but the nicest are the ones which belong to a serie which I was testing the 85mm I had just purchased in. I took the chance of portraiting her in a way it allowed me to capture her expression without losing any detail and showing as much as possible of the place where she was. I must say we got pics that are really BEAUTIFUL, one of them is the one I am talking about now…

Once finished the photo shoot, we headed out the highway to Ferrol as fast as we could to Silvia´s concert, whom we saluted after the show because it had been some time since I didn´t meet her. But that was not all… later, Ninwen sweated blood dancing swing with the next band and once the music had finished, we drank the well deserved drinks in a terrace. Then, car, back to Sada, resting and starting again the next day…

Talking about the processing of the pic, and as you will see, the pic didn´t need any type of retouch. I only had to correct a very disturbing blue colour cast… for the rest, I can ensure Blanca is so pretty, sensual and as good model as she appears in the picture. I hope all those people who think my pics are very photoshopped don´t feel very disappointed over and over, LOL!

Blanquita, my evil girl, thanks a loooooooooooooot for those wonderful  days together, we will never forger them… I love you forever and I will tell the rest of our adventures in the next picture.

La foto que hoy nos ocupa en DEADLYWOOD es muy especial para mí y me trae un montón de buenos recuerdos. Este verano había decidido no irme a ninguna parte, con lo cual se presentaba un tanto aburridillo, pero solo hasta que me mi adoradísima Blanca Ninwen decidió venirse a pasarlo conmigo.

Ninwen no solo es solo una de las modelos fotográficas más impresionantes del panorama nacional, con más de 7 años de carrera al máximo nivel, sino que es una cosita pequeñita, preciosa, simpática, loca, divertida y muuuuuy macarra. La conocía desde hacía tiempo, pero fue durante su estancia conmigo cuando las circunstancias nos convirtieron en uña y carne.

Blanca se vino a Galicia de vacaciones, de retiro espiritual, escapando un poco de la vida loca llena de prisas y stress que la persigue en la capital; y aunque ese era el plan, no pudimos dejar la oportunidad de trabajar juntos.

Esta foto pertenece a una sesión que improvisamos en un ratito en su casita de Sada… era una tarde de domingo, teníamos pensado ir a un concierto de Silvia Superstar, pero antes nos pusimos a probar cositas. Era la primera vez que trabajábamos juntos, pero sus tablas, la facilidad con la que se desenvuelve ella ante la cámara hizo que ya desde un principio empezásemos a conseguir buenos resultados.

A los pocos minutos de haber empezado, y siempre buscando hacer cosas diferentes, le pedí que se subiese a un tejadito que había en el patio interior de la casa. Cualquier otra chica (y sobre todo si no me conociese) me hubiese mirado con cara extraña, pero Blanca NO. Ella es una chica todoterreno, siempre dispuesta al “más difícil todavía” para conseguir una buena fotografía.

Sobre el tejado que se ve en la foto hicimos muchas fotos y muy diferentes, aunque las más bonitas son las correspondientes a esta serie en la cual estrenando mi recién adquirido 85 mm, aproveché para retratarla de una forma que pudiese capturar su expresión sin perder detalle alguno y mostrar lo máximo posible del entorno en el cual se encontraba. He de decir que salieron unas fotos PRECIOSAS, una de las cuales es la que hoy os comento…

Tras las fotos, nos fuimos corriendo para Ferrol al concierto de Silvia a quien aprovechamos para saludar ya que hacía tiempo que no la veía. Pero no solo eso, luego Ninwen sudó la gota gorda bailando swing con el siguiente grupo, y aun nos tomamos los bien merecidos jarrillos en una terracita. Después, coche, regreso a Sada, descansar y al día siguiente vuelta a empezar…

En el aspecto del de procesado, y como podréis ver, la foto no tiene retoque. Solamente tuve que corregir una dominante azul bastante molesta… del resto, os puedo asegurar que Blanca es tan guapa, sensual y buena modelo como aparece en la foto. Espero que toda esa gente que se cree que en mis fotos hay mucho photoshop no se sienta demasiada decepcionada otra vez, ja, ja, ja.

Blanquita, niña de la maldad, muchiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiisimas gracias por esos días tan maravillosos juntos… no los vamos a olvidar nunca. Te quiero muchísimo y en la siguiente foto contaré el resto de nuestras peripecias.

Diva Satánica: a girl who shocked me tremendously because of her striking appearance the first time I saw her myspace, but who shocked me even more for the fact of being from Coruña. Sadly we don´t have ANYONE like her in Galicia, that was the reason I found so hard to believe she was so close and I had never sen her before.

Huge was my admiration for this girl who was fighting to become an alternative model and who was certainly as good, or even better, than other girls from Los Ángeles, London or any other place in the planet. So I had to contact her.

I had been looking for Diva‘s style in Galicia for so long with no luck at all. Besides, in addition, she had already an impressive collection of pics taken by another big artist from Coruña like Raquel Blanco (hi Raquel!!!!). That forced me to retain a little bit my “love at first sight” until being completely sure I would be able to offer something with the quality that usually treasure her works.

I contacted her, we started talking, planning things, but we always found the same big problem: the time. Rocío‘s (or Diva’s…as you prefer) agenda doesn´t include many days when she is be available and that´s something we have always paid. So much  we haven´t worked many other times  from that day.

One day we had the chance of working together for an American label : «exeCUTE Clothing». The assignment didn´t seem very difficult: just to take a couple of pictures with some clothes she had been sent, and not much more. But as I´ve told you: ¨didn´t seem».

We arranged a date on a May afternoon, but the fantastic weather we have in Galicia committed itself to make things not very easy for us. Rain, unbearable wind (which made that in 4 out of 5 pics Ro‘s hair was covering her face), cold…

I also remember we needed one of those old electrical transformers in order to take some pictures in front of it, but we only found one on the road to Mesoiro, and it was raining cats and dogs… it was NOT normal!. We waited inside the car for almost one hour… and seeing that it was not going to stop raining, and that we needed to take the pics, we decided to leave. We realized the weather was not going to be any better, emergency solution: we saw a parking and we headed there. It was kinda picturesque to see the faces of the old women (and of people in general…) when they looked at our arsenal of chainsaws, chains, monkey wrenches… the parking belonged to a shopping mall!!!. If people usually hallucinate when they see someone taking some pics to a cute girl like Rocío, imagine what happens when they see such a deployement!.

However, even in that location, with such a simple background like a wall made of stone and its humidity, the shooting continued being really complicated, especially bacause of the cold and the wind, and the looks of the curious people who were having some good fun with our show.

Finally, instead of the two pics which Rocío needed, we took many more… we turned that  “assignment” in a very improvised session, very very improvised…  but with results highly amazing as it usually happens with this lovely girl. Not to say that after that day we´ve stayed together like flesh and blood, being capable of the craziest stuff that may go through your head, like attending to a jugglery academy in order to learn how to prepare our fire jugglery performances (even though we´ve only achieved to dominate correctly the art of ¨the flag¨, LOL!!!).

Talking about how I processed the the pic, now that I see the original one and even though it is barely photoshoped, this pic belongs to that era we´ve all been through of increasing the saturation to the levels of burning the retinas of those who take a look at the shot. When I see the final result, and how spectacular Rocío is, I believe that amount of saturation really fits the pic. What I tried was to add some ¨life¨ to the stunning hair Rocío always has and that has become her trademark.

From DEADLYWOOD I would love to send a very big hug, a kiss even bigger and to thank a million times to a girl who, besides of being Galicia’s most important alternative model (an one of the best in Spain), is a beautiful person and a big FRIEND.

Diva Satánica: una chica que me sorprendió tremendamente por su look tan especialmente llamativo la primera vez que la vi en su myspace, pero que me sorprendió todavía mucho más por el hecho de ser de Coruña. Lamentablemente no tenemos a NADIE como ella aquí en Galicia, con lo cual me resultaba difícil de creer que la tuviese tan cerca y no la hubiese visto antes.

Tanta fue mi admiración por esa niña que luchaba por ser una modelo alternativa y que sin duda estaba a la misma altura, o incluso mayor que chicas, de Los Ángeles, Londres o cualquier otro sitio del planeta, que tuve que contactar con ella.

El estilo de Diva es un estilo que yo andaba buscando desde hacía mucho tiempo en Galicia, pero sin fortuna alguna. Además, por si fuese poco, ella ya tenía una colección impresionante de fotos realizadas por otra gran artista como es la coruñesa Raquel Blanco (hola Raquel!!!!). Eso me obligó a contener un poco el “amor a primera vista” hasta estar seguro de que podía ofrecerle algo de la calidad que habitualmente atesoran sus trabajos.

Contacté con ella, fuimos hablando, planeando cosas, pero siempre encontramos un gran problema: el tiempo. La agenda de Rocío (o Diva…como más os guste) no suele tener demasiados huecos libres y eso es algo que siempre hemos pagado. Tanto que  desde aquella no hemos podido trabajar muchas veces más.

Un día surgió la oportunidad de hacer algo para una tienda de ropa de Estados Unidos: «exeCUTE Clothing». La misión no parecía difícil: hacer un par de fotos con una ropa que le habían mandado y poco más. Pero como he escrito: “parecía”.

Quedamos una tarde de domingo de Mayo, pero el maravilloso tiempo que tenemos en Galicia se empeño en ponerlos las cosas difíciles. Lluvia, un viento increíble (que hacía que de cada 5 fotos, en cuatro de ellas Ro tuviese el pelo delante de la cara), frío…

Recuerdo además que necesitábamos uno de esos viejos transformadores de la luz para hacer las fotografías delante de él, pero solo encontramos uno yendo hacia Mesoiro, y el diluvio que estaba cayendo NO era normal. Esperamos casi una hora en el coche… y viendo que no paraba, y que había que hacer las fotos sí o sí, pues decidimos largarnos de allí. Como la tarde lamentablemente no iba a mejorar, solución de emergencia: vimos un parking al aire libre y allí nos quedamos. Fue un poco pintoresco porque estaba justo a la entrada de un centro comercial y las caras de las señoras mayores (y gente en general) que ponían al ver nuestro arsenal de motosierras, sierras, llaves inglesas… Si la gente ya alucina al ver a alguien haciendo fotos a una chica guapa como Rocío, imaginad lo que sucede cuando ven semejante despliegue.

Aun en ese sitio, con un fondo tan sencillo como una pared de piedra llena de humedad, la sesión siguió siendo muy complicada, principalmente por el frío y el viento, y las miradas de los curiosos que flipaban con el show que allí montamos.

Al final, en lugar de hacer las dos fotos que necesitaba Rocío, hicimos muchísimas… convertimos ese “encargo” en una sesión improvisada, muy improvisada… pero con resultados sensacionales como siempre sucede con este encanto de niña. Ni que decir que después de esa sesión hemos quedado súper unidos, llegando a hacer locuras tan grandes juntos como apuntarnos a una escuela de malabares para aprender a hacer espectáculos con fuego (aunque de momento solo dominamos bien lo que es “la bandera”, ja, ja, ja!!).

A nivel de procesado, ahora que veo la foto original, aunque apenas tiene algún tipo de retoque, sí pertenece la foto a esa época que todos hemos pasado de incrementar la saturación hasta que quemamos la retina de aquellos que miran nuestras fotos. Viendo el resultado final, y lo espectacular que está Rocío, hasta creo que tanta saturación no ha quedado mal. Lo que traté fue de dar vidilla a ese pelo tan espectacular que siempre luce Rocío y que ya se ha convertido en algo tan característico de ella.

Desde DEADLYWOOD le quiero mandar un abrazo enorme, un besazo aun más grande y darle más de un millón de gracias a esta niña que además de ser la modelo alternativa más importante de Galicia (y de las mejores de España), es una bellísima persona y una gran AMIGA.

Un besazo Ro, se te quiere muchísimo.

Deadlywood #7 (Redux) – Vanessa Seoane

Our daily trip to DEADLYWOOD leds us today to Vanessa Seoane, a pic which, contrary to many people think, was nos taken in the already mega photographied (and mega boring) Casas Bailly. It was taken in Guísamo, on a rainy May afternoon and in a place with a veeeeeery difficult access.

The first of the curiosities I have to tell you is that in order to get to the mansion you see in the pic, it took us almost one hour to walk a distance of more or less 50 meters. We were completely ‘armed’ with coveralls, boots, pruning shears, gloves and more items, like my photographic stuff, the outfits… the road was so extremely innacessable that to get to the mansion was almost an impossible task. And if I tell you that we had already been there cleaning and inspecting the place, you can imagine the magnitude of the jungle we had to cross.

Once we managed to get to the mansion, and due to its poor condition, there were not many photographic alternatives than to place Vane on the old wooden beams, 2 meters above a ground totally covered by debris…  I think she was not very happy about it, but I had a series of pics very clear on my mind, so she didn´t have any other option than walking on the beam wearing her high heels. Reached this point you will probaby think “Alex, what a bastard you are, how can you do that?”. Well, then I can tell you that the one who is typing this words was in a similar situation to Vanessa´s, because I stood on the opposite beam, balancing and trying to take the pics in the best possible way… so please, don´t feel sorry only for the model, especially those of you who know how my tendence to fall down from everywhere. And I won´t tell you the adventures to light the scene, which were also really crazy….

There were perhaps other pics which were more stunning to be included in DEADLYWOOD, especially some where Vane can be seen on the middle of the beams, hanging over the floor and giving a very clear idea of the danger of the situation… but she looked really tiny in such an overwhelming scenario. So I decided to give her all the protagonism she deserved in a pic where the location doesn´t steal a single bit of it. Besides, I really liked her expression…

Far beyond the stories, I must say it was the first time I worked with Vane, who looked gorgeous and who was also really enthusiastic about the shooting. We´ve got a lot of stuff, of a very good quality, until that suddenly broke to rain putting an unexpected end to our photo shoot. Incidentally, I will add that the display of my camera was damaged by the rain that day, grrrrrrrl!!!!

We didn´t need an hour to escape from the place because the path was almost semi-cleared, but it had got pretty dark so we couldn´t see so much, it was raining cats and dogs, we were loaded as beasts of burden… it was not easy either. Half an hour maybe, Vane?. We ended absolutely wet…

Time to talk about the processing: I just converted the pic to black & white… nothing else. I had plenty of doubts about if I shoud choose the colour version or the black and white one. I really liked the colours, but once again the black & white seemed to add more dramatism to the scene.

However…a very big kiss beautiful and thanks a lot. We´ll be back to finish the photo shoot someday!!!

En nuestro recorrido diario por DEADLYWOOD toca detenernos en la foto de Vanessa Seoane, una foto que al contrario de lo que muchos piensan, no fue tomada en las ya quemadísimas (y aburridisimas) Casas Bailly. Fue tomada en Guísamo, en una lluviosa tarde de Mayo y en un lugar de muuuuuuy difícil acceso.

La primera de las anécdotas que os tengo que contar, es que para acceder a la mansión que veis, tardamos casi una hora en recorrer una distancia de unos 50 metros. A pesar de ir armados con buzos, botas, tijeras de podar, guantes y algunos elementos más, como todo el equipo fotográfico, el vestuario… el camino era tan sumamente inaccesible que llegar fue casi tarea imposible. Y si os digo que habíamos estado allí limpiando e inspeccionando el terreno unas semanas antes, os podréis hacer la idea de la jungla en la que tuvimos que adentrarnos.

Una vez fuimos capaces de alcanzar dicha mansión, y debido al estado tan lamentable en el que se encuentra, no había muchas más alternativas fotográficas que situar a Vane en las vigas, a una altura de unos dos metros sobre todo tipo de escombros… Yo creo que no le hizo demasiada gracia, pero es que tenía una serie de fotos muy claritas, así que no le quedó otra que ir haciendo equilibrios con sus taconazos por la viga. En este punto seguro que diréis “Alex, eres un capullo, cómo te pasas!!!!”. Bueno, pues os contaré como anécdota que quien escribe estas palabras se encontraba en una situación exactamente igual a la de Vanessa pero en la viga de enfrente, haciendo equilibrios para tratar de sacar las mejores posibles… así que no os dé pena solo la modelo, sobre todo a aquellos que conocéis mi facilidad para caerme de los sitios. Y tampoco os cuento las peripecias para iluminar la escena que también tuvieron tela.

Tal vez hubiese fotos más espectaculares de esta sesión para incluir en DEADLYWOOD, sobre todo algunas en las que se ve como Vane está en medio de las vigas, suspendida en el vacío y donde se puede contemplar el riesgo de la situación… pero ella salía demasiado minúscula ante un entorno tan apabullante. Así que decidí darle todo el protagonismo que se merece en una foto en la que el entorno no le roba ni una milésima de su protagonismo. Además me encantaba esa expresión…

Historietas aparte, he de decir que era la primera vez que trabajaba con Vane, que iba súper guapísima y que estaba súper ilusionada por las fotos. Conseguimos mucho material y muy bueno, hasta que de repente empezó a llover y tuvimos que abortar la sesión… Como otra curiosidad, aportaré que el display de mi cámara se estropeó ese día con la lluvia, grrrrrrrl!!!!

Para escapar de allí no necesitamos una hora porque el camino ya estaba semi-abierto, pero entre lo poco que se veía, la lluvia e ir cargados como mulas, tampoco fue tarea fácil. Media hora tal vez, Vane?. Vamos, que nos pusimos pingando…

En el aspecto del procesado, pues solamente la pasé a blanco y negro… no tiene más historia la cosa. Sí que tuve muchísimas dudas si optar por la versión en color o por la de blanco y negro. Me gustaban mucho los colores, pero al final la de blanco y negro me parecía más cargada de dramatismo. En fin…

Un besazo enorme guapísima y muchas gracias. Tenemos que terminar la sesión uno de estos días!!!.

SECRET Photo Shoot & More…

Yeeeeeeeeeees… there’s been a SECRET photo shoot, so don’t tell anybody pleeeeeeeease, LOL! I can finally show you some stuff from a seeeeeeeeeecret photo shoot that Chaneequa Douglas and I had not so long ago. It has been kept strictly secret in a place where nobody could find it, but I think it’s the right time to show you some stuff.

So here she is… I was very lucky to enjoy a nice afternoon with this cute little thing who’s as tall as me (so don’t expect a giant…) but who becomes as tall and powerful as Godzilla with her pink platforms on. Cute little monster she is!

Besides I can proudly say last Saturday I had my very first photo sessions working for THE BEST SOLUTION and TATTOO TRASH… I think we’ve got some pics which are gonna rock because the models (I am not sure if I am allowed to tell you their names…) and the whole team kicked ass!!! Results to be shown veeeeeeeeeeery soon…

And just to finish for today… the preview of the magazine BEDESEME which features me with my beautiful Aroa (luv u babe!) in this number is already online. You’ll have the chance of reading a very good number of this magazine and to enjoy very cool pics from some Spanish models & colleagues.

Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii… ha habído una sesión SECRETA, así que no se lo digáis a nadie por favooooooooooor, ja ja ja! Al fin puedo mostraros alfo de una sesión que Chaneequa Douglas y yo tuvimos no hace mucho. Ha permanecido estrictamente secreta en un lugar donde nadie pudiese encontrarla, pero creo que es el momento adecuado para enseñaros algo.

Así que aquí está… Tuve mucha suerte de poder compartir una tarde con esta cosita linda que es tan alta como yo (así que no esperéis una gigante…) pero que se convierte en tan alta y poderosa como Godzilla cuando se pone sus plataformas rosas. Un monstruito lindo!

Además puedo contaros que el pasado sábado tuve mis primeras sesiones para THE BEST SOLUTION y TATTOO TRASH… Creo que tenemos un material que va a arrasar porque las modelos (no sé si puedo deciros sus nombres…) y el equipo eran geniales. Los resultados muuuuuuuuuuuy pronto!

Y para terminar por hoy, ya se puede ver online el preview de la revista BEDESEME, que este mes  nos tiene a Aroa (te quiero!) en portada y a mí. Tendréis la ocasión de leer un muy buen número de esa publicación y de disfrutar de fotos muy guays de algunas modelos y colegas españoles.

The pic I am about to talk today is the perfect example of how things happen «by accident», by whims of destiny which sometimes conjures itself to give away priceless situations, because a girl like Mitsuko, is absolutely priceless.

I was at Shibuya hairdressing salon in Barcelona last summer, preparing a photo shoot with Zoe Nil (other of the girls you can enjoy in  DEADLYWOOD) when I suddenly saw a beautiful girl in a black and short dress which let me to see how mega ultra hyper inked she was… Honestly, I must say she really caught my attention, not only because of the many tattooes she had in her arms, chest, legs…  but also because of the oriental motifs and their cute beauty. Simply STUNNING. So much I couldn´t avoid the temptation of taking some pictures to her…

In more or less 10 minutes we improvised a shooting in which I tried to noticed, above all,  Cris’ tattooes (now you know Mitsuko‘s real name.). I took about 30 pics, and most of them looked spectacular to me… I was very surprised with the results, because everything was so improvised, we didn´t know each other, we barely had any time… and the results were super cool.

After that mini photo shoot, Cris told me she worked with her boyfriend at Poker Tattoo Estudio, a tattoo studio I can ensure it offers AMAZING results, there isn´t a better proof than Cris herself. (A very big hug boys!!!)

Talking about how I processed the pic, it is barely photoshopped. Even though I prepared a colour version for all the pics, I decided to include the black & white version in DEADLYWOOD. DEADLYWOOD, HOLLYWOOD… Mitsuko is surrounded by an halo of glamour, and that was exactly what I intended to show in this portrait, trying to shoot her as one of those classic beautiful ladies we all have admired

Not only Mitsuko is an ultra spectacular alternative beauty, but also a beautiful human being who became a very good friend from that day.

A veeeeeeeery big hug Cris, and thanks a lot for sharing your lightness in DEADLYWOOD.

La foto que hoy os “destripo” es otro ejemplo de cosas que suceden “por accidente”, de caprichos del destino que a veces se conjura para regalar situaciones impagables, porque una chica como Mitsuko, no tiene precio.

Me encontraba el verano pasado en la peluquería Shibuya de Barcelona, preparando una sesión con Zoe Nil (otra de las chicas que podéis disfrutar en DEADLYWOOD) cuando de repente vi a una belleza dentro de un vestido cortito y negro que dejaba ver que iba mega ultra hiper tatuada… La verdad he de decir que me llamó muchísimo la atención, no solo por la gran cantidad de tatuajes que llevaba en sus brazos, en su pecho, en sus piernas… sino por sus motivos orientales y la belleza de los mismos. Sencillamente ESPECTACULAR. Tanto que no me pude resistir a la tentación de hacerle fotos…

En poco más de 10 minutos improvisamos una sesión en la cual quise sobre todo destacar los tatuajes de Cris (ahora ya conocéis el nombre de Mitsuko…). Hice alrededor de 30 fotos, de las que la gran mayoría me parecieron espectaculares… Los resultados me sorprendieron bastante porque fue una cosa tan sumamente improvisada, no nos conocíamos, sin apenas tiempo, y se lograron unos resultados súper chulos.

Después de la mini sesión, Cris me comentó que trabajaba con su chico en Poker Tattoo Estudio, un estudio que os puedo asegurar que ofrece unos resultados ALUCINANTES, no hay mejor prueba que Cris. (Un saludo chicos!!!)

En el aspecto del procesado, la foto apenas tiene retoque. Aunque preparé todas las fotos en su versión color, opté por quedarme con la de blanco y negro para DEADLYWOOD. DEADLYWOOD, HOLLYWOOD… Mitsuko está rodeada de un halo de glamour, y eso quise destacar en estre retrato, tratando de plasmarla como una de esas bellezas clásicas de Hollywood que tanto hemos admirado.

Mitsuko no es solo una belleza alternativa ultra espectacular, sino una belleza como persona que desde ese día se convirtió en una buena amiga.
