It came to my mind yesterday about a time I was SPLASHED by a big wave in Las Palmas (Spain) and consequently about an EPIC picture I took of my dearest Shelly D’Inferno who was SPLASHED too a few minutes later. To my surprise, facebook reminded me, that happened EXACTLY 2 years ago: January 16th 2017. We were on holiday, visiting a very nice location in Vecindario and (even I was careful and aware it might happen) I was splashed by surprise by a giant wave while being silly on a live video… you can still find it somewhere in my timeline.

This is (I think) a great picture I have been waiting for Shelly to publish, but which never happened and has sadly remained forgotten since that day.  I ignore the reason, maybe she never received it, maybe she was keeping it for a calendar, maybe she was not fully satisfied with it, maybe didn’t have the right quality or maybe she has just forgotten to post it, LOL! Everything can happen.

What you see in the pic is absolutely REAL… we  saw a nice spot on the shore with some waves breaking, so we decided to try to take a nice picture there while Dan Thomas was working with Ryo Love. The picture was taken with no other equipment that my camera and with very poor conditions: it was already getting dark on a cold winter day, around 19:00 hours approx, so I tried to capture the little light available using my 50 mm and increasing the ISO as much as possible. It was cold, because it was quite windy too… so I tried to be fast and do my best while she was posing as an elf diva.

What we were NOT expecting was such a huuuuuuuuuuuge wave breaking behind Shelly, so you can guess what happened only a few seconds later: SPLAAAAAAAAAAAAASH!!!! LOL! It was EPIC 🙂

Now I think about it, it is funny to see how different photographers work… I remember Dan fully loaded carrying all his equipment, taking his time to prepare his lighting, and in the other hand myself  (as usual) carrying the minimum, or NOTHING like in this case in order to be able to act  immediately in case an interesting situation comes to scene. No need to say, both ways are the same valid, only different styles!.

When I look at this picture I like it especially because how EPIC it is and because how everything happened. We were not expecting anything like this, and suddenly… However, mixed emotions: because of the way it was taken, it is quite grainy (which is not necessarily bad…) and I found the way the wave melts with the sea a bit weird… but that’s the way it was. A magic moment was captured… which doesn’t have to be fully perfect. Let’s say it’s «raw» , so let’s show things in the way they happened.

The edition was very delicate and consisted basically in making the picture lighter (it was super dark because the lack of light) and trying not to lose the details of the wave, already in danger because of the grain. I didn’t want to touch the wave too much to prevent the scene from looking too fake or exaggerated… so what you see it the best I could get: might not be perfect but at least a moment which will not happen anymore was captured forever: 3 seconds later Shelly was SOAKING WET 🙂

There was not a second chance for this image, it’s not my best picture ever, but  I am satisfied with the final result taking into account the way everything happened.

Ayer se me vino a la cabeza una vez que me puso LINDO una ola enorme en Las Palmas, y consecuentemente en una foto ÉPICA que le hice a mi queridísima Shelly D’Inferno que también se puso LINDA unos minutos después. Para mi sorpresa, facebook me recordó que eso sucedió EXACTAMENTE hace 2 años: el 16 de Enero del 2017. Estábamos de vacaciones, visitando las Salinas en Vecindario y (aunque ya iba con ojo de que pudiese suceder) me pilló una ola gigante por sorpresa mientras hacía el mono en un video en directo… todavía lo podéis encontrar en alguna parte de mi  timeline.

Ésta es (creo) una buena foto que he estado esperando a que Shelly la publicase, pero que nunca sucedió y ha permanecido tristemente olvidada desde ese día. Ignoro el motivo, talvez nunca llegó a recibirla, tal vez se la ha estado guardando para un calendario, tal vez no se quedó convencida de todo, tal vez no tenia la suficiente calidad o tal vez, simplemente, se le olvidó publicarla, ja ja ja. Todo puede ser!.

Lo que véis en la imagen es totalmente REAL… vimos un sitio bonito en la costa con las olas rompiendo, así que decidimos probar a sacar alguna foto mientras Dan Thomas trabajaba con Ryo Love. La foto fue tomada sin más equipo que la cámara y en unas condiciones muy pobres: ya se estaba haciendo oscuro en un frío día de invierno, alrededor de las 7 de la tarde, así que traté de capturar la poca luz que quedaba usando mi 50 mm y exprimiendo el ISO tanto como pude. Hacía frío porque también hacía mucho viento… así que traté de ser rápido y de hacerlo lo mejor posible mientras ellas posaba como una diva élfica.

Lo que  NO nos esperábamos fue que semejaaaaaaaante oooooooooooooooooooola  fuese a romper detrás de Shelly, así qeu os podéis imaginar lo que sucedió segundos después:  SPLAAAAAAAAAAAAASH!!!! Ja, ja, ja… fue MORTAL!!!.

Ahora que pienso en ello, es curioso ver la forma en que trabajan los fotógrafos… Me acuerdo de Dan cargado hasta las cejas con todo su equipo, tomándose su tiempo para montar su iluminación, y en el extremo opuesto yo (como suele suceder) con lo mínimo o sin NADA como en esta ocasión para ser capaz de actuar inmediatamente en caso de que se presente una sitiación interesante. No hace falta decir que ambas formas son igualmente válidas, sólo estilos diferentes!.

Al mirar esta foto me gusta especialmente por lo ÉPICA que es y por como sucedió todo. No esperábamos nada así, y de repente… Sin embargo también he de decir que me deja el cuerpo un poco raro: por la forma en la que fue tomada tiene muchísimo grano  (lo que no es necesariamente malo…) y también encuentro que la ola se funde de una forma un poco rara con el agua… pero así fue. Se capturó un momento mágico… que no implica que tenga que ser totalmente perfecto. Digamos que es «crudo» , mostremos las cosas de la forma que sucedieron sin muchos artificios.

El procesado fue muy delicado y consistió principalmente en aclarar mucho la foto (era súper oscura por la falta de luz) y en tratar de no perder mucho detalle en la ola, ya en bastante peligro por culpa del grano. No quise tocarla demasiado ni darle volumen para evitar que pudiese parecer demasiado falsa o exagerada… por lo tanto lo que véis es lo mejor que os pude dar: puede que no sea perfecta, pero por lo menos conseguí capturar un momento irrepetible: 3 segundos después Shelly estaba completamente EMPAPADA 🙂

No había una segunda oportunidad para esta imagen, no es mi mejor foto, pero estoy satisfecho con el resultado final teniendo en cuenta la forma en quesucedió todo.

Love bleeds, love lives, love dies… it’s no surprise.

Have you ever seen a siren? Have you ever seen a DEAD siren? I was lucky to shoot two of them not so long ago, but the shoot turned out to be a bit sad because what was meant to be a crazy party ended in some kind of funeral.

What you see is a cute result of an unforgettable shoot at Meesteres Madieanne’s Studio in Amsterdam. Two beautiful sirens having too much evil fun in the water, until my dearest Naomi Morphine finally deceased in the arms of Meesteres Madieanne. It was not easy to get rid of her through the sink!

This shoot was too much fun, too much craziness going on, and a photographer in a “grrrrrrrrllllllll…. we are here to TAKE pics” bad mood. The ladies looked awesome dressed like sirens, weather was really good, wine seemed to be tasty and girls just wanted to have fun. I think they didn’t need more than just one minute to destroy one hour of make-up, I hadn’t even turned my camera on… BIG GRRRRLLLL!!!!!

Anyway, it was a crazy, funny and awesome day and I am very satisfied with the results…. especially because they are pretty different to what I usually do, but with my style shining everywhere. This is one of the pictures that I don’t take every single day, but that when it appears people can easily recognize it’s mine.
I really like the image for many reasons… you can find pure evil in Meesteres Madieanne’s face, sweetness in Naomi’s, sadness because of the whole scene, romanticism, grief, darkness… and it will probably take you a while to realize what’s going on. Conceptual photography… oh my God, I’ve grown older!!!

The edition comes from Erik’s very first and raw idea (and Naomi’s love for desaturation) when we were checking the stuff in the computer. Basically we decreased drastically the saturation and saw it might be interesting. No need to say this time I did many many things to the image until I got this final result. Cleaning the scene, making sure their outfits looked great, trying to create the right atmosphere… The final result is not very distant from the original image, though it took me a while to achieve what I had in mind.

Many many thanks to everyone involved in this crazy image: Meesteres Madieanne, for the location, outfits, craziness… Naomi Morphine for the make-up, fun, dinner… and my super colleague, assistant, filmmaker Erik for creating that stunning scenario for me. My most sincere thanks to all of you, hope you like the result.

El amor sangra, el amor vive, el amor muere… no es sorpresa alguna.

Habéis visto alguna vez una sirena?? Habéis visto alguna vez una sirena MUERTA?. Tuve la suerte de hacerle fotos a dos no hace mucho, pero la sesión terminó de una forma un tanto triste, porque lo que supuestamente iba a ser una fiesta terminó convirtiéndose en un funeral.

Lo que véis es el resultado tan cuqui de una sesión inolvidable en el Estudio de Meesteres Madieanne en Amsterdam… Dos bellas sirenas pasándoselo demasiado de muerte en el agua, hasta que mi amadísima Naomi Morphine finalmente pereció en los brazos de Meesteres Madieanne. No fue nada fácil deshacerse de ella por el desague!

Esta sesión fue muy divertida, demasiada locura en todo momento y un fotógrafo en modo “grrrrllllll… estamos aquí para HACER fotos” encabronado. Las damas estaban preciosas convertidas en sirenas, hacía muy buen tiempo, el vino parece que estaba bueno y las chicas solo querían pasarlo bien. Creo que no necesitaron más de 1 minuto para cargarse 1 hora de maquillaje. No había ni encendido la cámara … GRRRRLLLL!!!!!

Ok, fue un día muy loco, divertido y estoy muy satisfecho con los resultados …. Especialmente porque son muy diferentes a lo que hago normalmente, aunque están impregnados de mi estilo por todas parte. Esta no es una foto que haga todos los días, pero que cuando sale a escena la gente puede reconocer fácilmente que es mía.

Me gusta mucho por muchos motivos… podéis encontrar pura maldad en la cara de Meesteres Madieanne, dulzura en la cara de Naomi, tristeza por la escena en general, romanticismo, dolor, oscuridad… y probablemente os lleve un cierto tiempo daros cuenta de lo que está sucediendo. Fotografía Conceptual… oh Dios mío, me he hecho mayorr!!

La edición parte de una muy primera y cruda idea que tuvo Erik (y del amor de Naomi por la desaturación) cuando estábamos revisando el material en el ordenador. Básicamente bajamos la drásticamente la saturación y vimos que podría ser interesante. No hace falta decir que esta vez sí que tuve que hacerle bástantes cosas a la imagen hasta llegar al resultado final. Limpiar la escena, asegurarme de que los vestidos salían bien, recrear la atmósfera adecuada… El resultado final no dista demasiado de la imagen original, aunque sí que me llevó algún tiempo llegar a conseguir lo que tenía en mente.

Muchísimas gracias a todos los que participaron en esta locura de imagen: Meesteres Madieanne, por la localización, vestidos, locura… Naomi Morphine por el maquillaje, diversion y la cena…y a mi súper colega, ayudante y cámara Erik por haber creado todo ese escenario tan alucinante para mí. Mis más sinceras gracias, espero que os guste el resultado.
